Despite having the same name, the younger Charles, a relatively unknown royal, was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth II as the first Honorary P

The King might be the most famous Charles in the Royal Family but there is one lesser known member who has his own impressive title – and will gain a brand new one in the years to come.

Charles Armstrong-Jones is one of the late Princess Margaret’s grandchildren.

Aged 25, he is the eldest child born to Serena Stanhope and David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon – the only son of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon.

He was born 1 July 1999 at Portland Hospital in London, six years after his parents’ marriage in 1993.

From 2000 to 2002, Charles lived with his parents at Kensington Palace as they supported ailing Margaret in her final years. And on May 14, 2002 Charles’ younger sister was born at the same hospital, Lady Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne Armstrong-Jones. (Margarita was later a bridesmaid at Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding in 2011.) Like many members of the Royal Family, he attended Eton College before going on to study product design engineering at Loughborough University.

Charles is the only one of Princess Margaret’s grandchildren to have a title. His father became Earl of Snowdon following the death of his own father, Antony Armstrong-Jones, in 2017. Charles, in turn, became Viscount Linley. As Viscount Linley, Charles is 26th in line to the throne and heir apparent to the Earldom of Snowdon, which he will inherit after his father.

Despite his connections to the monarchy, Charles has kept a low-profile. His grandmother Princess Margaret once said: “My children are not royal; they just happen to have the Queen for their aunt.” And the same is true for her grandchildren. Charles did briefly step into the spotlight when he was made the first Page of Honour to his great-aunt, the late Queen, in 2012. That prestigious role required him to carry the long train of the Queen’s robes at state occasions, such as the Order of the Garter service. But since stepping down in 2015, he has lived largely under the radar.

Sadly in February 2020, his parents announced they had separated after 26 years of marriag e, and had decided to file for divorce. In a statement, a spokesman for the couple said at the time: “The Earl and Countess of Snowdon have amicably agreed that their marriage has come to an end and that they shall be divorced. They ask that the press respect their privacy and that of their family.”
