Following a life-changing Top Gear accident, Freddie Flintoff returns to TV with a cricket documentary.

Freddie Flintoff is making his TV return with a second series of a BBC One cricket documentary after suffering a life-changing accident during the filming of Top Gear in 2022

Freddie Flintoff showed he was on the road to recovery as he began his TV comeback after his horrific Top Gear accident.

The smiling former cricketer, 46, is making his TV return with a second series of BBC One cricket documentary, Field of Dreams.

And he was seen grinning in the capital on Wednesday heading into a media event to promote the upcoming show.

The pics of the dad-of-four were taken outside the swanky Charlotte Street Hotel in London.

One onlooker said of the sports star, who cut a casual figure wearing a grey sweatshirt, black shorts and Crocs: “He looked in great spirits and appeared to be at the hotel with friends who he makes his TV series with.

“The scars from his Top Gear crash seem to have improved a lot since the accident and it was great to see him with a smile on his face again. It was like the old Freddie.”

Flintoff was hurt during the filming of Top Gear in 2022 at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. The BBC apologised to Flintoff over the injuries in March 2023 and he reached a settlement with the BBC last year, reportedly worth £9m. The payout was not funded by the TV licence fee, as BBC Studios who makes the show is a commercial arm of the broadcaster.

In the first series of Field of Dreams Flintoff was determined to get a group of Preston teenagers to become motivated and engaged in his beloved sport of cricket, with plenty of ups and downs along the way.

In the original press release about the second series, the BBC said: “Freddie is setting himself an even bigger challenge as he takes some of his team and a handful of fresh recruits on a new adventure.” adding that there would be four episodes.

Flintoff was pictured for the first time since the accident in September last year, as he led fielding drills with England players in Cardiff ahead of the team’s one-day international with New Zealand. More recent photos have shown that his injuries from the Top Gear crash have continued to heal.

In March last year, the BBC said in a statement: “We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.

“We understand this [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year.”

Top Gear hosts, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris are are coming back to the BBC for a new show following the announcement. The duo have reunited again for a brand new road trip show, which is called Paddy and Chris: Road Trippin. The BBC series will explore how people in Europe approach life as they get older as the Bolton-born comic, 50, and car journalist, 49, try to uncover the “secrets to living a long and full life”.

When contacted by the Mirror, the BBC said of the new series: “Coming to BBC One and iPlayer, the three-part series, made by BBC Studios Factual Entertainment Productions, will see self-proclaimed ‘well and truly middle aged’ Paddy and ‘’soon to be fifty’’ Chris go on a mission to explore the secrets to living a long and full life. The two friends will be meeting some of the healthiest, happiest, not to mention ‘well -preserved’ and long-lived people alive. Along the way, they will be getting under the skin of each country they visit as well as doing plenty of soul searching.

“The pair will head to Sweden, Greece and Switzerland. Facing classic midlife tropes of their own, Paddy and Chris will take a deep dive to discover some of the most brilliant mid-life secrets on the planet.”
